George Lyon MEP – Scotland
He is a former Member of the Scottish Parliament for Argyll & Bute (1999-2007) and served as Chief Whip and then Deputy Finance Minister between 2003 and 2007.
Brought up in a 7th generation tenant faming family and a former chairman of several NFU committees as well as Vice-President and President of NFU Scotland, George is the Liberal Democrat spokesperson on Agriculture in the European Parliament with a strong track record of campaigning on rural issues and on land reform.
His own initiative report on reforming the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) in 2010 was backed with a great majority by the European Parliament, setting out the principles and priorities that should guide the imminent reforms. George continues to shadow the CAP reform on behalf of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE).
George was made a Fellow of the Royal Agricultural Society in 2001.
